Don't wait! Sign up for the Derry City Triathlon
The firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon is back bigger and better than ever before with spaces for up to 550 entrants at this year’s event, taking place on Sunday 19 June. With a growing number of participants racing for a competitor slot each year, organisers are advising both beginners and experienced triathletes to sign up as soon as possible to secure their space.
This year’s Triathlon consists of a 750m swim in the River Foyle, a 20km closed road cycle and culminates in a 5km flat run, passing the Peace Bridge. With relay race options, the race is suitable for participants of all abilities, as the elements can be split between a team of three.
Derry race has National Series status
The firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon achieved prestigious National Series status in 2015 and this year’s event includes the addition of a qualified Super Series element, welcoming some of the best Triathletes in Ireland to the challenge.
Race advisor, Adrian Kelly from the North West Triathlon Club, explained: “firmus energy first supported the race at its inception in 2013 and it’s been great to have their ongoing sponsorship as it has allowed us to develop the competition each year. With the National Series status, we’ll attract professional athletes with a competitive edge, but equally we look forward to seeing our returning novices looking for some fun. The event really is for everyone!”
Kids TRYathlon returns again
Following last year’s success, the popular TRYathlon will also return, welcoming children and teenagers between the ages of eight and 15. The event allows young people to get involved in the fun, during the run up to the City of Derry Triathlon. The TRYathlon takes place on Sunday 12 June at the Templemore Leisure Complex and includes running, cycling and swimming activities.
Angeline Murphy, marketing manager of firmus energy, said: “The TRYathlon allows children of the City to have a go at various sports, encouraging them to try new things, make new friends and have a fun day and we hope that lots of young people sign up for this event!”
“We are delighted to continue our sponsorship of the City of Derry Triathlon, which is a high-calibre event that welcomes participants from Northern Ireland and from further afield. Each year the event has grown and we are delighted with the interest in the competition, both from professionals and fun-loving sports enthusiasts.
“Community-driven local charity, Foyle Search and Rescue, is returning as the charity partner for the fourth year running and we hope that they will continue to benefit from participants’ support, as their dedication to helping people in and around the River Foyle is vital and extremely commendable.”
