firmus energy is offering money-saving tips and advice for homeowners in Northern Ireland as part of an industry-wide campaign, Energy Aware Week, aiming to empower homeowners and reduce families' fuel bills by tackling energy efficiency.

Energy Aware Week, which is running from 13 – 19th October, is supported by companies across the Northern Ireland energy sector. Natural gas supplier, firmus energy, is one of the ten partners offering helpful guidance to families in the area of energy efficiency.

Des Brown of firmus energy, commented: “We are delighted to be a part of Energy Aware Week and hope that our advice can help families to make their homes even more energy efficient, which will save them money. Northern Ireland has the highest rate of fuel poverty in the UK, with a staggering 1 in 3 homes suffering the effects. Simple changes in their home could go a long way to making their home more efficient.

“Some of our recommendations include checking radiators are working efficiently, if they have cold spots they may need to be bled, upgrading home insulation, opting for a shower instead of a bath, using energy-saving light-bulbs, closing doors and curtains to keep in heat and putting lids on saucepans when they are boiling. Simple changes like these can save pennies which in the long run, can saves pounds. In fact, households spend up to £35 each year on powering up laptops and computers as they are still using energy in standby mode so simply unplugging these devices can save pounds!

“There is nothing better than the thought of snuggling up in your warm and cosy home as the colder weather draws in and nights are getting longer. It is even more comforting if it costs you even less! Simple changes in your home really can make a big difference.

“Grants may be available for making certain energy efficiency changes to your home and details of these are available at www.nidirect.gov.uk
