firmus energy common sense guide to spring cleaning and saving dough!

Image: save a lot of dough with firmus energy

A spring clean is a great way to put the cold, miserable winter behind you and start afresh for the New Year. But giving your whole home a good clean can often be a daunting prospect, and a mammoth task. Luckily, there are plenty of common sense hints and tips out there to revitalise your home and keep it in tip top condition without you pulling your hair out...

When spring cleaning your home, don't be tempted to do bits and pieces here and there - start at the top of the house, and work downwards, on a room by room basis. This will stop any dirt or dust from being trodden into clean rooms, and will make your job far more effective. You'll also have the satisfaction of seeing each room sparkling clean when it's finished - giving you more of an incentive to finish the job! Be sure to have a checklist of what you want to achieve in each room, to make sure your spring clean is a success.

Now, here is where firmus energy can spring into action to help you save a lot of dough. If you currently use oil for your home heating and hot water you could save money by converting to natural gas - over the last year natural gas has been over 20% cheaper than oil.1 And if your oil boiler is old, you could save even more money as a new 'A' rated natural gas boiler is more efficient.2 So cheaper fuel and a high efficiency boiler could add up to some serious savings on you annual heating bill.

  • An old oil boiler is only likely to be 70% efficient2
  • Natural gas has been over 20% cheaper than oil over the last year1
  • A new ‘A’ rated natural gas boiler is over 90% efficient2
  • An old oil boiler is only likely to be 70% efficient2

1: % savings calculated using Energy Saving Trust figures for annual heat and hot water for an average 3 bed semi with limited heating controls of 15,100kWh for natural gas and 15,262kWh for oil, firmus energy licence area domestic PAYG price of 4.715p/ kWh and average price for home heating oil (December 2012 - November 2013) of 5.90p/kWh. Oil price figures taken from the Consumer Council NI Oil Survey, that is conducted twice weekly and provides an average representation of the oil prices in NI at any one time. Not every town or supplier is represented. Calculation includes VAT and excludes direct debit discount and installation costs.
2: A new ‘A’ rated natural gas boiler is over 90% efficient compared to 70% for an old oil boiler over 15 years old. An operational improvement in efficiency of 20% represents an actual fuel saving of more than 25%. Source: SEAI.
