As part of the £720,000 investment by the Antrim-based energy supplier, nearly 700 homes in the village will have the chance to make the switch to natural gas from oil. That switch prepares homeowners for a carbon neutral future as the gas network and appliances are suitable for renewable gases such as Biomethane and a Hydrogen blend which will soon be transported through the existing pipes.
Attendees can access free information and energy advice, with firmus energy representatives, installers, control specialists and boiler manufacturers available to answer questions, including the process of upgrading from oil to gas. People will also learn about the range of energy efficiency measures that can help households immediately save on their energy usage.
Ryan O’Neill, Energy Advisor for firmus energy said: “This investment will allow homeowners throughout Portballintrae to take advantage of the many benefits natural gas brings, including
- More space around the home when you remove the oil tank, oil boiler, hot water cylinder and water tanks in the roofspace.
- Up to 52% carbon reduction immediately when switching from oil to gas.
- Instant radiator heat
- Constant hot water, which never runs out and allows you to have great powerful showers
- No need to order heating fuel
- Advanced controls which means that homeowners can control their heating from wherever they are via their phone
‘’Anyone considering switching over to natural gas can hear about its many wide-ranging advantages at the event on June 23. Local Mobile Coffee Van, Really Awesome Coffee will be there on the day, serving up free refreshments for the local community” Ryan added.

Notes to the editor:
In the near future, the firmus energy gas network will facilitate the injection of renewable carbon neutral Biomethane. Hydrogen injection will be further down the line. The gas network supports the decarbonisation of our homes and businesses, protects the biodiversity of our rural landscape and will create significant numbers of new jobs throughout the rural economy - supporting the Executive’s target of doubling the renewable energy economy by 20301.
