Camlough pupils get safety training

Pupils at St. Malachy’s Primary School in Camlough got a special visit from firmus energy engineers to learn about staying safe at a special assembly this week. The visit coincides with recent works ongoing in the area which means many homes now have the opportunity to get connected to natural gas.

Chantal Hemphill, firmus energy Health, Safety & Environmental Manager, said:

“The special Assembly focussed on raising children’s awareness of the potential dangers of playing near or on construction sites. The importance of staying away from construction vehicles, stacks of pipes and excavations was communicated in a quirky and interactive way.  Many examples of potential dangers were discussed and the children were encouraged to identify how they would keep themselves and their friends safe. It is a chance for us to show our appreciation to the local community for their support while works have been ongoing.

“While the presentation is delivered in an engaging way, there is a serious message behind it. We hope to let them see, in a safe environment, what it is that we are doing and to make them aware that the construction zones are not suitable play areas. We would ask parents to reinforce this message - and ensure they keep children away from trenches and machinery.”

The £700k investment in the Camlough area will offer up to 546 homes with the potential of connecting to natural gas alongside 77 local businesses. The project involves the laying of 8,392 metres of pipe; it is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

School Principal Mr Jim Kearns commented:

“We are very grateful that firmus energy has taken the time to visit St. Malachy’s PS, Camlough.  The session was very informative and I know the pupils were especially excited to get to try on some of the helmets and hi-vis clothing.”
