With the cost of living and energy crisis continuing on a global scale firmus energy has launched a help initiative for customers, and the wider public called Let’s Save Energy. Through the campaign, the company is sharing expert tips and hints with the aim of helping customers save energy in their homes giving them more control over their bills.

As part of the company’s Let’s Save Energy campaign firmus energy has launched a series of videos pushed out via its website and social channels. Its energy advisors, who are all City and Guilds Energy Efficiency trained will also be taking to the road as part of a special Let’s Save Energy Roadshow Series allowing customers and the wider public to access professional advice on energy efficiency at informal sessions in towns and cities across the company’s network area. Advice on boiler replacement grants and the opportunity to book in for a free energy audit will also be available.

Jemma McKee, Energy Advisor at firmus energy said:

“firmus energy’s Let’s Save Energy roadshow series will offer customers and the public expert tips and hints, that mostly only professionals or those working in the industry know, on how to conserve energy in the homes as well as maximise the energy they purchase with the aim of helping them control costs.

In Northern Ireland over 60%* of homes are still fuelled by oil. Did you know that up to a third of your home heating spend could be wasted if your oil boiler is over 15 years old? So if you are looking to discover the true efficiency of your home or interested in making energy savings just pop along to a local roadshow event.”

At the heart of the ‘Let’s save energy’ campaign is feedback and advice. One of the many customers firmus energy has recently engaged with is Louise from County Down.

Louise and her family were able to save £1,200** off the installation of natural gas through the Boiler replacement scheme.

She said: “Making the switch to natural gas made economic sense for our family. The oil boiler and system we originally had meant we had to run our heating to simply have hot water to shower. Natural gas allows us to run the two systems independently which means we only use the energy we need. As part of the system, we also opted to get Advanced Controls which allow us to switch our heating and hot water on and off remotely via our smartphones. The other advantage is that our central heating system is fit for the future so there won’t be any costly bills to upgrade our heating system in line with the Government’s decarbonisation requirements. Right now, we are in the driving seat of our energy consumption and bills with natural gas.’

firmus energy’s top tips to save energy

Keep your room thermostat to a temperature that you feel comfortable with (normally 18 - 210C)**. Homes could save up to £80 per year by turning their thermostat down by 10C *

Set your thermostatic radiator valves in each room to a temperature that suits your circumstances. We use the rooms in our homes differently, e.g. kitchens tend to be warm due to cooking so adjusting the thermostat lower than other rooms may prevent overheating and save energy.

Check that your heating timer is set at the correct times / days that you require heat. As we enter Spring and Summer there is hope that the sun will appear, this may mean that you can scale back on your time settings, By optimising your heating timer and day settings for each season you can instantly save energy.

Set the central heating and domestic hot water output temperatures of the boiler to your desired heat level. This may be lower than what it is currently. There is no efficiency in producing boiling water when in reality we bathe in water between 32° C – 40° C**

If you don’t know where to start when it comes to maximising the energy you purchase or just want to hear more pop along to one of the Let’s Save Energy roadshows coming to a town near you or visit firmus energy online to learn more.
