Bryan Keane signs up for City of Derry Triathlon

Most people can only dream about competing against an Olympic triathlete, but for this year’s firmus energy City of Derry participants, it will be a reality.  North West Triathlon Club has just announced that Bryan Keane, who has qualified for this summer’s Olympic Games, will compete at the prestigious event on Sunday 19 June.

The 35 year old Irishman, from Cork, plans to use this race as part of his training build up to the Olympic Games, which are due to take place this August in Rio.  Following a bad car accident that ruled him out of the London 2012 Games, Bryan has undertaken extensive preparation to ensure he is in peak condition this year’s spectacle.

Commenting on why he chose to compete in the prestigious firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon, Bryan explained:  “This event is a great training opportunity for me and, although I’ve never taken part in this challenge before, I’ve heard all about it from fellow Olympian Aileen Morrison who won the ladies race in 2014.  She advised me that if I ever got a chance to take part, I should as it was one of the best races and courses in Ireland and with such a recommendation, I was determined to take on the challenge at the first opportunity!”

New Derry triathlon course record?

Angeline Murphy of firmus energy, said:  “We are delighted to hear the news that Bryan is taking part in our event and it is testament to the high standard of the race.  I hope that he enjoys the Triathlon and we look forward to seeing his time, which could set a new course record.

Competiting against a Rio bound Olympian

“You never know, participating in the firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon could just give him the edge at Rio - let’s hope so!  It will also be a great experience for the other competitors, both veterans and beginners, to take part alongside an Olympian.”

The closing date for entries is Friday 10 June and to find out more about the firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon, visit www.firmusenergyderrycitytriathlon.com.
