firmus energy join local businesses in gearing up for Newry City Water Festival

Join local businesses in gearing up for Newry City Water Festival

With just over a week to go until this year’s firmus energy Newry City Triathlon, part of the Newry City Festival of Water, the natural gas company has joined forces with local businesses in encouraging people of all ages and levels to sign up to the main event, the fastest sprint triathlon in Ireland.

The lead partner in this year’s event, Newry Business Improvement District (BID) has worked hard to involve local businesses in supporting this popular event. Local eatery Synge & Byrne have continued their sponsorship of the festival, alongside Rostrevor based firm East Coast Adventure centre. Local Community Groups are also involved, members of Down GAA will marshal the event and members of the Special Olympics Kayak Club are involved in water safety for participants.

Paul Stanfield, Director of Sales, Marketing & Customer Operations at firmus energy said:

“We are pleased to see the numbers coming in for those who have signed up to the triathlon and I would urge anyone who hasn’t signed up to do so quickly. It is a great event for the City and is an opportunity for triathletes of all levels to take part in one of the most competitive races in the sporting calendar. Whether you are a beginner or an old pro looking to beat your personal best there is something for everyone at this event. It is great to see so many local business supporting the triathlon and overall festival of water, and really highlights the business spirit that
Newry has”.

Synge and Byrne Managing Director, Adrian Garvey, a regular on the triathlon circuit said:

“We came on board as sponsors because we love to see people doing the impossible and overcoming their own expectations. We are happy to be working with Newry BID to support local business opportunities and to bring people into our community. We’ve swam, cycled and run every meter of this race ourselves and we want to help people experience the pure joy and sense of achievement that comes from crossing the finish line - it can't be beaten”.

The festival takes place on Sunday, 27 August with the triathlon kicking the event off on Sunday morning. Alongside the triathlon, the festival is a free family fun day with an array of activities in and out of the water, including water zorbing, kayaking, Canadian canoes, banana boats, climbing walls, street performers, face painting and Fire and Rescue Demonstrations on water.

Ian Cummings from East Coast Adventure centre added:

“We are delighted once again to play a role in delivering the Newry City Triathlon. It is fantastic to see so many athletes both local and national taking part in what is a truly iconic event for Newry Mourne & Down. We are looking forward to working with all the local businesses and suppliers involved in the event to make it one of the best triathlons in the Irish calendar”.

There will be some disruptions to traffic on the day and the public are advised to follow all trafficsigns and diversions. Albert Basin from Dublin Road Bridge to Drumalane will be closed from 7pm on Saturday 26 August until Sunday evening. Other areas will experience some traffic disruption between 6am and 2pm on Sunday, including Bridge Street, Kilmorey Street, Dublin Road and Warrenpoint Dual Carriage way.

The cost to take part in the triathlon is £30 and attendance to the water festival is free to all.
