More than 150 children and teenagers from the local area came together at the weekend to take part in the firmus energy City of Derry Kids’ TRYathlon at the Templemore Sports Complex.

This fun event, which included a variety of running, swimming and cycling activities, was part of the exciting build up to the firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon on Sunday 19 June, which will see hundreds of competitors converge on the City to participate. The kids’ TRYathlon was organised by Derry City & Strabane District Council, the North West Triathlon Club and firmus energy with activities taking place at Templemore Sports Complex.

Austin Cutliffe, TRYathlon race director commented:

“Our aim is to encourage children to leave their electronic devices behind for a while and make sport part of their routine and develop a healthy lifestyle.  There is also the added benefit of making new friends while enjoying themselves and perhaps trying something new.  Following the non-competitive activities, each child was presented with a medal to mark the day.

“It was also fantastic for the children to have so much support with friends and families cheering everyone on and encouraging them all the way to the line.”

Angeline Murphy of firmus energy, commented:

“The TRYathlon was no mean feat for the 8 – 15 year olds taking part.  With various elements including an ‘Aquathon’, ‘Duathlon’ and ‘TRYathlon’, the children have all ‘trained’ hard with lots of running, swimming and cycling practice during the last few weeks and, this year, it was a great bonus to have such a lovely spell of weather!  The TRYathlon allowed the children to have a go at a variety of sports and get a taste of what triathlons are all about in a light-hearted and non-competitive way.

“Anticipation is building across the City in advance of the upcoming City of Derry Triathlon this Sunday, 19 June.  It should be a real spectacle with the first ‘wave’ of swimmers entering the water at Sainsbury’s at 7am.”

Tommy McCallion on behalf of Derry City & Strabane District Council added:

“We would like to wish all those taking part in the Triathlon the best of luck as they complete their final training and get ready for the event.  This super series event has established itself as a highlight in Northern Ireland’s sporting calendar, and should be particularly exciting this year with the confirmation that Olympic hopeful Bryan Keane will be competing.”
