Jonathan Strain from firmus energy was one of the key speakers at a recent IGEM (Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers) event which took place at the Riddell Hall in Belfast. He joined representatives from the other local network operators, Phoenix and SGN, to discuss the future of natural gas in Northern Ireland to an audience of over 150, made up of engineers, contractors, manufacturers and senior representatives from the utility industry.
The event focused on the latest innovations and technologies that are helping to advance development in Northern Ireland’s gas network.
Jonathan Strain, Construction Manager for firmus energy explained: “This was a great opportunity to get experts together from right across the industry to present future plans and discuss how we can all work together to develop natural gas in Northern Ireland.
“It was a fantastic event and it was clear from the great turnout and the detail in each of the presentations, that the future of the local industry is very positive. We have come a long way since natural gas was first introduced into Northern Ireland back in 1996, when it was initially just available to homes in greater Belfast.
“By 2022 over 60% of NI households and businesses will have access to natural gas and customer connection numbers are expected to be around 300,000 enjoying the many benefits natural gas brings including instant heat and constant hot water. There is still a lot of work to be done and progress to be made but each of the three network operators, firmus energy, Phoenix and SGN have very ambitious plans in place to ensure that thousands more properties will have the opportunity to connect to a cleaner and more efficient fuel source over the next few years.”
