Throughout the school term, pupils from St Brigid’s Primary, Gracehill Primary, Harryville Primary and Greystone Primary have received one-to-one mentoring sessions every week from four dedicated firmus employees to help improve their reading skills and build their confidence.

Julie Birt, one of firmus energy’s participants in the scheme, commented, “We were delighted to sign up for Business in the Community’s ‘time to read’ initiative for the second year as we received such great feedback from the participating schools last year. The scheme allows firmus to give something back to the local community and I know the employees get a real buzz out of helping the children and developing relationships with them throughout the year.

“Inviting the children to visit our offices is a nice way to mark the end of the school term before they head off on their summer holidays, plus they also get to see what their ‘buddies’ do on a day-to-day basis! The scheme is not only beneficial to the children but also to the employees involved as we have gained a lot on a personal level. I have enjoyed the experience hugely and I wish the pupils every luck in their future reading careers!”

Joyce Rainey, Business in the Community said, “A big thank you to the firmus energy volunteers for their efforts over the past year. Their commitment to Time to Read ensures that they make a really positive impact on the primary schools in the community and also to individual Key Stage 2 children. We understand that it requires buy in from company management to make Time to Read work and we really appreciate the time they have invested. We look forward to having them on board again next year.”
