The tariff reduction, which was agreed following discussions with the Utility Regulator and the Consumer Council, will mean annual savings of £96 for an average domestic customer.

This reduction fulfils firmus energy’s unique price promise to guarantee its customers cheaper natural gas prices than oil. Having independently tracked heating oil prices over the last 9 months, firmus energy has reduced their gas price to ensure that customers can continue to be confident that natural gas is the cheapest fuel for homes and businesses. The new tariff means that firmus energy’s natural gas price will be 15% cheaper than home heating oil.

Mark Prentice, firmus energy’s General Manager, said: "We are delighted to announce such a significant reduction in gas bills for our customers, particularly as we come into the winter months. Natural gas has historically been cheaper than oil and wholesale gas prices have decreased significantly over the last six months. This is in stark contrast to crude oil prices, which have increased by a massive 83% over the six month period from February to August 2009. We have shown over the last 4 years that firmus has consistently delivered value to our customers and this has been backed up by our unique price promise against home heating oil. Once again we have delivered on our price promises and natural gas users can be fully confident they have made the right decision to choose natural gas from firmus, both now and over the long term."

Customers who made the switch to firmus energy three years ago will now have saved an average of 14% per year 4 on their fuel bills by switching from home heating oil. They have also contributed to a cleaner environment, having reduced their carbon emissions by up to 25% by switching to natural gas from oil.

Mark continued: "firmus has brought innovation to the markets in which we operate, offering our customers transparent online billing and payments and the convenience of prepayment cards. These facilities have been introduced in order to make our customers lives easier and ensure they get the lowest possible gas price coupled with exceptionally high levels of customer service.

"Our customers can be assured that by choosing natural gas from firmus energy they can take advantage of the lowest possible heating and hot water bills in Northern Ireland. We have a number of promotional deals to help customers convert their homes and businesses, with new offers to be announced next month, making it even easier for customers to access all the cost-savings and convenience benefits associated with natural gas. "With oil prices predicted to rise, and natural gas continuing to offer savings on fuel bills, there has never been a better time for householders to make the switch to firmus energy." The tariff reduction will be applied to direct debit payments and pay-as-you-go cards from 1st October 2009.
