firmus energy launches electricity offer in northern ireland

firmus energy, following the recent award of an electricity licence, has formally announced its entry into the electricity market and will confirm the contracting of their first electricity customers within the next few weeks.

The company already supplies natural gas to more than 90% of all the large industrial and commercial businesses along the North-West and South-North gas pipelines.

The new licence means that the company can now provide dual fuel energy contracts, initially to industrial and commercial premises only across Northern Ireland.

During the last three years, the company has been developing the new natural gas network to supply towns and cities such as Londonderry, Ballymena, Craigavon and Newry. In addition, firmus energy has taken advantage of market opening of the natural gas market in greater Belfast and has already begun to contract with customers in this competitive arena.

Mark Prentice, general manager of firmus energy said, “Becoming a dual fuel energy provider has always been a clear strategic goal for us since we began developing our natural gas network. Our industrial and commercial customers have increasingly been asking for this facility and we are keen to respond.

“We already have a strong and growing customer base in the towns in which we operate and our new licence will give businesses the option of having both natural gas and electricity supplied by firmus energy.
“Our aim, and that of our parent company BGE, is to become the first choice, dual fuel energy company in the market and to provide real benefits to our customers. This is being backed up by significant investment by BGE in new electricity generation, both conventional CCGT (Combined Cycle Gas Turbine) and wind.”

Mark Prentice said that he believed that firmus energy’s entry into this market will provide greater choice for energy customers, especially in the current economic downturn, where fuel costs are an increasingly important operating cost for businesses.

“As we have already demonstrated with our existing natural gas customers,” he added, “firmus energy will bring all our customer service values of flexibility and transparency in our pricing options, as well as an enhanced service and billing proposition for customers both in the Greater Belfast gas market and in the electricity sector.
