How deep do you need to dig to lay the pipes?
Pipes positioned in the road or grass verges will be laid around 1m beneath the surface.
What pressure will the gas be at within the mains running along my street?
The pressure in the gas mains will be up to 4 bar - the equivalent of twice the pressure of a car tyre. By the time the gas comes up your drive or path into the meter the pressure is only 21 mbar.
How long will it take to lay all the pipes in each of the
towns you are working in?
It will take approximately 3 - 5 years in each town to lay the core gas mains system. After this work will continue on new developments and extensions to the core system. Disruption on any one street will be kept to a minimum and should last 2-3 weeks on each road depending on its length. Our contractors aim to complete around 70m (or 200 feet) of mains each day.
What guarantee can you give me that you won't just sign me up for natural gas then raise the prices a few months later?
Historically gas prices have always been lower than competing fuels such as oil. We recognise that price stability is important to customers and to that end, we have fixed our tariff price for residential customers until January 2009. Clearly no company can fix its prices forever - however, we are confident that natural gas will continue to offer significant financial and environmental benefits to customers in the longer term versus oil and other fuel alternatives.
I've heard natural gas is dangerous? it can explode or suffocate you if it escapes in your house. Isn't that the case?
Natural gas is one of the safest fuels available in the UK. Its safety record is unrivalled, with over 20 million customers using natural gas in both Great Britain and Ireland. Natural gas is naturally odourless but has an odour added to it for detection, should a gas escape occur.
My boiler has always been outside or in the garage-putting a gas boiler in my kitchen must be dangerous, is it?
No! Natural gas is a non-toxic fuel (not poisonous). Modern natural gas fired boilers are room sealed, which means that the air used in the boiler is taken directly from the outside and the products of combustion after the gas is burnt go directly outside. Additionally, modern natural gas fired boilers have a number of safety devices that always operate to safety guidelines. If the flame goes out, the gas will automatically cut off, and additionally the boiler will not over heat because of in-built thermostats. A ROOM SEALED gas boiler can be installed in virtually any room in the house including the garage if desired.
