north-west pipeline

The 112km gas pipeline which connects the Scottish Northern Ireland Pipeline (SNIP), at Carrickfergus, outside Belfast to Coolkeeragh power station in Derry, was commisioned on schedule in October 2004. The pipeline facilitated the development of gas networks in five towns adjacent to the route; Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine, Limavady and Derry.

Prior to finalising the route, BGE(Northern Ireland) carried out an extensive public consultation programme along the proposed route including consultations with individual landowners, statutory bodies, borough and district Councils and representatives from farming organisations such as the Ulster Farmers' Union and the Northern Ireland Agriculture Producers Association.

An environmental Impact Assessment of the entire project was carried out by independent consultants to assess any potential adverse impact on the environment and in response BGE (Northern Ireland) instigated mitigating measures as required.
